The Chronicle

The Chronicle newspaper is a private newspaper that was established in 1990. It is one of Ghana’s respected newspapers, highlighted for example by an award for ‘The Best Investigative Newspaper’ of the Year in 1993.

The Chronicle newspaper, according to Geopoll, a mobile survey platform (January – March 2017), is the eleventh highest read newspaper in Ghana with an average readership of 53,000 constituting 0.84 % of the audience share. In 2003, Ghana web voted The Chronicle as the ‘Most Credible Newspaper’, with The Commonwealth Press Union also commending it as, “A daily private newspaper with quality news analysis.”

The Chronicle reports on a broad range of issues including politics, business, education, entertainment and sports. Big part of its work is devoted to investigative reporting aimed at uncovering the ills in Ghanaian society. While it has – unlike the Daily Graphic – no specific political page, its former editor, Mr Omaboe, disclosed that "the entire newspaper is meant to be political", although "the front-page contains the most political news".

The Chronicle newspaper is owned by Nana Kofi Coomson. Kofi Coomson is a reputed journalist in Ghana and was in 1993 adjudged the 'Overall Best Journalist' of the Year in Ghana by the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA). He is a past President of the Private Newspaper Publishers Association of Ghana (PRINPAG).

The Chronicle started as a weekly newspaper in 1991. Became a bi-weekly, but is currently published daily. Although The Chronicle was pre-dated by other private newspapers as the Pioneer and the Catholic Standard, it swiftly distinguished itself as a firebrand and an authoritative newspaper to provide the much-needed alternative voice. From its inception, The Chronicle showed its readiness to oppose what it saw as official ineptitude and, lack of accountability, openness and transparency.

Calling itself the "Spear of the Nation" (Umkonto We Sizwe - from the Zulu language of South Africa), The Ghanaian Chronicle - through prominent columnists, and by using hard-hitting front-page stories and headlines provided readers with what they would never have obtained from the Daily Graphic back then.
